Himalayan salt lamps are trendy lamps with benefits for your home or workplace’s air quality. When I first saw them around I was like “oh, it’s a lamp that’s made from that pink salt stuff. Cool.” Well come to find out it’s actually much more than that. Himalayan salt comes from the Himalayan Mountains in the Punjab region of Pakistan. They mine it for either powdered salt we can use on our food (I think it tastes better than regular salt) or for these lamps. They get their orange/pink color because the salt contains traces of potassium, magnesium, and zinc along with their primarily sodium chloride base. Eating salt has its own set of benefits but the lamps when lit work their own way due to the negative ions they emit. Himalayan salt lamps naturally purify the air through hygroscopy. Hygroscopy means to attract water molecules through the air then absorb the molecules. Water molecules have the ability to carry foreign parties like dust, smoke, pollen, pet dander, mildew etc. As the lamp warms up from the light inside, it traps the water molecule’s foreign particles within the salt crystal and evaporates the water molecules back into the air. These salt lamps reduce allergy and asthma symptoms since they remove the foreign microscopic particles like mold and pet dander that we can be allergic to. When the lamp heats up and begins the hygroscopic cycle, it changes the charge of the molecules released. Electronics are a huge producer of positive ions. Positive ions are not the best for our lungs because our microscopic hairs that line our windpipe become weak and don’t work well to keep foreign contaminants out of our lungs. Himalayan salt lamps take these positive ions and release clean water vapor into the air and expel negative ions which do opposite work than the positive ions for our lungs. The negative ions increase the microscopic hair activity to keep our lungs clear. The increase of negative ions also promotes higher energy levels. Positive ions slow you down while negative ions give you energy. Negative ions are believed to produce reactions that increase levels of mood and serotonin which help alleviate depression, boost energy, and relieve stress. Negative ions also increase the flow of oxygen to the brain. Electronics like cell phones, laptops, computers, televisions and appliances release positive ions as well as electromagnetic radiation. Though invisible, electromagnetic radiation can have serious long term effects like an increase of stress levels, fatigue, and reduced immune response for the body and more. Himalayan salt lamps work to neutralize the electromagnetic radiation. It is wise to keep a lamp by the electronics you use most. Even though these salt lamp health benefits aren’t fully supported by modern science, there are indications that salt lamps enhance your well-being. Based on plausible science, salt in the air does help with breathing problems and negative ions are linked to better moods. Many people swear they feel better after using salt lamps. I personally like my little salt lamp. They say to put multiple throughout the house because one little lamp probably can’t reach the whole house. Make sure not to put your salt lamp by very wet areas like the dishwasher or your shower because salt crystals can melt with long exposure to high humidity.
